SCHOOL UNIFORM POLICY

Our Vision for Ashurst:

Through our core values of Love, Hope and Joy we nurture and support our children to become well rounded, confident and responsible; children who aspire to achieve their full potential and are connected to and concerned about God’s world that needs them.

Our vision is rooted in the biblical text found in 1 John 3:18

“Let us not love with words or speech but with actions and in truth.”

Aims and objectives

Our policy on school uniform is based on the belief that school uniform:

·         promotes a sense of pride in our school

·         helps to create a sense of community and belonging towards the school

·         supports our commitment to inclusion

·         is practical, smart and designed with health and safety in mind

·         should be considered good value for money by parents and carers.

Expectations

We expect all parents and carers to support their children to comply with this uniform policy, which will be monitored. Any parent or carer whose child’s uniform does not meet the requirements will be advised of this by a member of staff and given the opportunity to acquire/ wear the correct uniform.

The Role of Parents

We believe that one of the responsibilities of parents and carers is to ensure that their child has the correct uniform and PE kit, and that it is clean, in good repair and that the child’s name is easily visible on all items.

The Role of Governors

The governing body of Ashurst CE Aided Primary School supports the Headteacher in implementing the School Uniform Policy. It considers all representations from parents regarding the uniform policy and liaises with the Headteacher to ensure that the policy is implemented fairly and with sensitivity. It is the governors’ responsibility to ensure that the school uniform meets all regulations concerning equal opportunities. Governors ensure that the school

Uniform Policy enables children to dress sensibly, in clothing that is hardwearing, safe and practical.

Pre-Loved Uniform:

Pre-loved uniform is available at a very reasonable price– please ask for the name of the parent who organises this.

We also ask that children have a coat, a water bottle and school book bag (available on the school website) in school every day. These fit in the children’s drawers and help letters, homework and reading books make the journey home safely.

Jewellery/ hair wear

Jewellery should not be worn by children with the exception of a sensible watch; stud earrings may be worn which if possible should be removed or covered with tape for PE. Stud earrings may be left in for swimming.

Hairstyles should be appropriate for school, i.e. no “mohicans”, no designs cut into hair, no extremely short hair (no-guard or number 1) or bright coloured highlights.

All long hair (shoulder length or longer) should be tied back completely and this applies to both boys and girls.

Hairbands/scrunchies are to be green, white, grey, black, navy or brown.

Equality Impact Assessment

Ashurst CE Aided Primary School has a commitment to promote equality and we believe this policy is in line with the Equality Act 2010 as it is fair, it does not prioritise or disadvantage any child and it helps to promote equality at our school.

In line with ‘Flourishing for All’  (Church of England Education Office 2024) the school uniform list affords children the opportunity to explore their identity without fear of harm, judgement or being ostracised.

Monitoring and Review

The governing body monitors and reviews the school uniform policy through its Children and Learning sub-committee who will consider, with the Headteacher, any requests from parents or carers for individual children to have a special dispensation with regard to school uniform.
